And the National Theatre of Brno, led by renowned artistic director Mario Radačovský, has designed a catalogue of her life story that’s sure to sell out fast.
We open in a luxe hotel room chaotically prepping for a fashion show, where an older Coco studies her reflection and rewinds to her rivalry with Émilienne d’Alençon over Étienne Balsan. Now comes the reveal of the famous hats that first made her name. Then she ascends higher into society, and into a life-altering love with Arthur “Boy” Capel. Success. Self-empowerment. Determination. Belief. Passion. Creativity. War. Scandal!
This is a stirring, thought-provoking tale told through ballet of a magnate who symbolizes elegance and independence, yet whose choices make for a riveting cautionary tale. A brilliant depiction of the life of a genius.
SYNOPSIS
ACT I
Is it days, hours, or merely the last moments before a fashion show? A lonely Coco watches her reflection in the mirror of her luxurious suite. What does she actually see? Success? Fame? Her destiny? Beautiful, strong, yet vulnerable and lonely. So very lonely. She believes in the power of the individual, yet longs for companionship. She seeks truth in her own reflection.
The show is the culmination of her creative work. Preparations gather momentum. Choreography rehearsals, fragments of clothing, male and female models—an atmosphere of organised chaos in which people are constantly rushing from one place to another and exchanging roles. The costumes are not yet finished. They are still being worked on. They have to be absolutely perfect, don't they? Coco watches everything with a sharp eye. No, not quite perfect yet.
She remembers how it all began. She remembers Étienne Balsan and his beautiful lover, Émilienne d’Alençon.
She deliberately enters their intimate world, hoping to break free from her former life. The positions of the two rival women constantly shift. Gradually, Coco wins Étienne over, at least in her thoughts. In the end, their rivalry ends in a draw, and the two women become friends.
Coco begins as a milliner. Hats become the key to her first success. She strips away unnecessary ornament and, in doing so, defines a new and elegant style. Her new friend Émilienne introduces her hats to the highest circles of refined society, where they are met with great success.
Living with Étienne opens the door to the wealthiest clients. New ideas emerge, and with them a new style that reflects Coco's private life. The simplicity, casual elegance, comfort, and originality of her designs accompany her rise into high society. Here she first meets Arthur "Boy" Capel. Neither of them yet knows how fateful this meeting will become.
Arthur desires her, but Coco resists. She refuses to belong to anyone. Despite their irresistible attraction, both question whether their relationship can survive in real life. Afraid of abandonment and disappointment, yet longing for understanding and intimacy, they are drawn to one another like a magnet.
With Arthur, Coco experiences true love for the first time. He accepts both her love and her independence, becoming not only the great love of her life but also an endless source of inspiration.
Coco lives through a period filled with love. She works with total commitment—drawing, sewing, making alterations—her mind overflowing with ideas. Happy, confident, and believing in herself, she creates without limits.
INTERMISSION
ACT II
Sewing machines have become the symbol of success, behind which lies the hard work of skilled seamstresses. Enterprise and success have reached unprecedented proportions. Madame Coco stands at the centre of the action and everyone's attention. For her, beauty lies in austere elegance. Every detail has its meaning, and everything unnecessary must go. Arthur reappears, as he has so many times before, still unable to decide whether to stay or leave.
They are torn by emotions. Their relationship is filled with both love and painful melancholy, with regrets spoken and unspoken, repeated departures and passionate reunions. Coco is troubled by an ominous premonition she cannot understand. Arthur leaves. Their relationship has survived so many symbolic disasters, but it cannot survive the tragedy of a car accident...
Fate deals Coco a cruel blow. Arthur's death leaves her with a loneliness that remains with her for the rest of her life. She pours all her energy and passion into her work and creative endeavours. A legend among perfumes is born, and soon the name Coco Chanel is known by women around the world.
Coco leads a seemingly carefree life at the Ritz Hotel in Paris during the German occupation. Her relationship with the German diplomat and spy Hans Günther von Dincklage becomes one of the darkest chapters of her life. This controversial period damages her reputation, and she struggles to clear her name and come to terms with her past. She finds herself in the isolation of exile, lost and lonely, uncertain how to begin again. Will she find the strength to start anew?
